Properties map familiar FP&A concepts into a model that can be reused across pages, scenarios, and calculations.

A traditional P&L

Imagine a P&L with Revenue and Cost of Goods Sold on rows and months across columns. In cfo.ai:
  • Revenue is a metric property
  • Cost of Goods Sold is a metric property
  • Date is a dimension
  • Month is the Date granularity
  • Base or Plan is the scenario
  • Actuals and Forecast can be Formula periods separated by Last close
If you add Department beneath each line item, Department is another dimension. Sales, Marketing, and Engineering are dimension items.

Line items and accounts are not always the same

A modeled line item such as Revenue is usually a metric. A source Account or Account Code is often a dimension because it classifies transactions. Several accounts may contribute to one modeled Revenue metric. The correct role depends on whether the property represents the value being analyzed or the category used to organize it.

Assumptions are properties too

Price, Conversion Rate, Average Salary, and Commission Rate are metric properties. They may be inputs rather than financial results, but they are still values that can be calculated, compared, and used in formulas. This shared property model lets a formula connect financial statements with operating drivers without treating them as separate systems.
