Move Last close, your month-end date, forward after you finish each month’s close, so that month’s numbers from your books show as Actuals and your Forecast starts after it. Last close does not move on its own; until you or Ari move it, a newly closed month stays in the Forecast. For how Last close splits your Model, see Actuals, Forecast, and Last close.

Move Last close

Ask Ari, naming the month you closed:
We finished closing September. Set Last close to September 30, 2026.
Ari changes Last close in the Scenario your chat is in. To change another Scenario, name it.Ari also counts the Variables the move leaves with no formula in the months that changed side and names up to 10 of them, such as a cash balance that has only a Forecast formula. A number in those cells reads 0 and a date or text value reads empty, and a balance that reads its previous month runs forward from that 0; see What moving Last close changes.
Each Scenario has its own Last close. A Scenario follows Main’s Last close until someone changes it in that Scenario. To keep Last close current, schedule a Trigger that asks Ari to move it each month, on a day after your books usually close. See Schedule a recurring report with a Trigger.

Set the default grain and date range for new tables

In Settings → General → Date & Time:
  • Default date granularity sets the period new tables show, such as Month or Quarter. It is Month unless you change it.
  • Default date range sets the first and last periods new tables show. Pick both on the calendar.
These defaults apply to Table blocks you create from now on. A table you already have keeps its own grain and range until you change them on the table. Like Last close, the defaults belong to the Scenario you are viewing, so set them while viewing Main to change them for your plan.

If your fiscal year does not start in January

cfo.ai has no fiscal-year setting. Quarters, half-years, and years always follow the calendar, January to December. To work in a fiscal year that starts in another month, such as April:
  1. Keep your Model monthly. Monthly numbers are the same in any fiscal year.
  2. Set Default date range to start in the first month of your fiscal year, such as April, so new tables open on your year.
  3. Ask Ari for fiscal-year totals, naming the months, such as “Add a total for our fiscal year, April 2026 through March 2027.”
  4. Tell Ari when your fiscal year starts and ask it to remember that for the workspace, so its answers use your year; see Teach Ari your company’s conventions.
For why years follow the calendar and other ways to show fiscal years, see Fiscal years.
